Why YLG

Balayage that doesn't betray itself in 8 weeks

Hand-painted by certified colourists

Every stylist has done 200+ hours of balayage-specific training. Freehand painting in vertical sweeps — not stripes, not stencils.

Olaplex No.1 + No.2 included

Bond-builder added to the lift mix protects internal hair structure during processing. Hair stays softer and stronger post-colour. No extra charge.

Lasts 12–16 weeks

No harsh root line. Grows out as a soft transition. Most clients refresh at 3–4 months — vs every 6–8 weeks for highlights.

Custom toning included

After painting, we tone the result to match your skin undertone — cool ash for warm skin, warm honey for cool skin. Not a one-size formula.

Built for Indian hair

Darker base levels (3–5) need specialised technique to lift cleanly. Our colourists do 5+ balayages per week on Indian hair — different from western tutorials.

FAQ

Balayage FAQ

How much does balayage cost in Chennai at YLG?

Balayage at YLG Chennai starts at ₹3,499 for short hair, ₹4,499 for medium hair, and ₹5,999 for long hair. A balayage retouch (top-up) is ₹2,499. Wednesday 50% off colour offer includes balayage — bringing prices down to ₹1,750–₹3,000 range. Beauty Secret Card members get an extra 15–25% off.

What's the difference between balayage and highlights?

Highlights are applied in foils — uniform, structured stripes of lightened hair. Balayage is hand-painted freehand — sweeping strokes that mimic how the sun naturally lightens hair. Balayage grows out softer because there's no harsh root line. Highlights need touch-ups every 6–8 weeks; balayage stretches 12–16 weeks. Balayage is generally less maintenance.

How long does balayage last?

Balayage grows out beautifully over 12–16 weeks because the painted-on technique creates no harsh demarcation at the roots. Most clients do a refresh (balayage retouch) at 3–4 months. Compare to highlights which need touch-ups every 6–8 weeks. Use sulphate-free shampoo and purple toner shampoo (for blonde balayage) to keep tone fresh between visits.

How long does the balayage process take?

A first-time balayage takes 3–4 hours: 30 min consultation, 90–120 min painting and processing, 30 min toning, 30 min wash and finish. Bring a book, your laptop, or queue up a movie — it's a long appointment. Retouch (top-up) appointments are 2–2.5 hours. Best to book mid-morning or early afternoon.

Does balayage damage hair?

Balayage lifts the natural pigment to expose lighter underlying tones — that does involve some damage to the cuticle. Our colourists use Olaplex No.1 + No.2 added to the balayage mix as a bond-builder to protect the internal hair structure during processing. Post-balayage, we strongly recommend a hair spa or repair treatment every 4–6 weeks to keep ends healthy.

Can balayage work on dark Indian hair?

Yes — and Indian hair takes balayage beautifully. Common tones for darker base: caramel, honey, copper, dark chocolate, smoky brunette. We discuss your natural undertone, skin colour and lifestyle before painting. For very dark virgin hair, we may need 2 sessions (pre-lightening first, then tone) to reach lighter shades like blonde or ash.

What's the difference between balayage and ombre?

Both are gradient techniques but applied differently. Ombre is a horizontal fade — dark roots, lighter ends, with a clear transition zone. Balayage is hand-painted vertical sweeps — softer, more dimensional, doesn't have a single horizontal transition line. Balayage looks more natural; ombre looks more graphic. Ombre also lasts ~12 weeks but the transition zone becomes obvious as it grows out.
