Why first salon visits feel intimidating (and shouldn't)
Most first-time customers walk into a premium salon and freeze on three things: "I don't know what to ask for", "I don't know how much it'll cost", and "I don't know if they'll judge me for my hair condition". All three concerns are valid and all three are easily resolved by knowing the flow before you arrive.
This guide walks you through what happens — from when you park outside to when you walk out — at any of our four YLG Chennai outlets (Adyar, Anna Nagar, Porur, Porur).
1 · The 9-step walkthrough
Step 1 — Before you leave home (5 min)
- Send WhatsApp to +91 91504 55822: name + service you want + outlet preference + arrival time
- Reply confirms slot. You're locked in.
- Save 1-2 photo references on your phone if you want a specific look
- Bring: phone, payment method (cash / UPI / card all work). Don't bring: anything else, we provide
Step 2 — Arrival & parking
- All 4 outlets have 2-wheeler parking right outside
- 4-wheeler parking varies: Adyar has paid street parking 2 min walk; Anna Nagar has dedicated lot; Adyar street parking 1 min walk; Porur has free building parking
- Arrive 5 min before slot — gives you time to use the restroom and settle
Step 3 — Reception
- "Hi, I have a 11am booking under [your name]" — that's all you need to say
- Receptionist will check the system, confirm service, and call your stylist
- You'll be offered tea / coffee / water — accept, it's free
- If walk-in: receptionist gives you wait estimate; if longer than 15 min, ask for a coffee at the nearby café and they'll WhatsApp when ready
Step 4 — Stylist greeting + consultation (10-15 min)
For first-time customers, every service starts with a brief consultation. The stylist asks:
- What's your hair / skin like at home? Any known allergies?
- What treatments have you had before? Any colour, smoothening, etc.?
- What's the look or result you want today?
- Any photo references?
- Show / discuss what they'll do, with the price quoted clearly
Critical: if the price feels off or the proposed service feels different from what you wanted, say so now. Adjusting at the consultation is easy. Adjusting mid-service isn't.
Step 5 — Settling in (gowning + station)
- Helper takes your bag and stores it
- You're given a gown / cape (everything stays clean)
- Walked to your chair / facial bed / mani-pedi station
- Phone goes to silent or stays charged on the side counter
Step 6 — The service itself
Duration varies: threading 10 min, blow-dry 25 min, haircut 30-45 min, classic facial 60 min, premium facial 75 min, full bridal 2-3 hours. Hair colour 90 min. Smoothening 3-5 hours.
Two things during the service:
- Speak up if uncomfortable. Water too hot, scalp too tight, mask burning — say so. Comfort is normal feedback, not complaint.
- Trust the stylist on technical decisions. If they say "I'd recommend this product instead", their reasoning is usually sound. Ask why if curious; argue if you genuinely have a reason; otherwise let them work.
Step 7 — Mid-service mini-consultations (sometimes)
For longer services, the stylist may pause to discuss results. Examples: "I'm seeing more dryness than expected, would you like to add a 15-min hair mask for ₹600?", or "Your skin's responded really well, want to try the gold facial mask for ₹400 extra?"
It's OK to say no. These are genuine recommendations, not pressure tactics, but you're never obliged. "Thanks, maybe next time" is a perfectly fine answer.
Step 8 — Wrap-up + take-home advice
After the service, the stylist usually walks through:
- How to maintain the result (e.g., "no wash for 72 hours after smoothening")
- Recommended home products (you can buy or skip)
- When to come back (4-6 weeks for hair spa, 3 months for root touch-up, etc.)
- Any red flags to watch for in the next 48 hours
Step 9 — Payment + booking next
- Reception generates the bill (matches the consultation quote)
- Pay: cash, UPI (GPay/PhonePe/Paytm/BHIM), credit/debit card
- Tip is entirely optional. Customary 5-10% for premium services if you want.
- Receptionist asks if you want to book your next visit while you're there — saves time later
- You walk out with: the result, a feedback link via SMS/WhatsApp, optional take-home product

The single best skill for any first-time salon visit: knowing how to communicate your expectation. Three patterns work well:
Pattern 1 — Show + describe
"I want this look [phone photo]. My hair is naturally wavy, gets frizzy by 3pm. Last time I got a haircut, it was [too short / boring / I loved it]." The stylist now has 3 data points: target look, your hair tendency, what worked or didn't.
Pattern 2 — Constraint-first
"I'm looking for something [low-maintenance / office-appropriate / wedding-event-ready] for [next month / today / a long time]. Open to any cut/colour the stylist recommends within those constraints." This frames the brief without locking the stylist into a specific look. Often gets a better result than "I want [exact thing]".
Pattern 3 — The unsure honesty
"Honestly, I don't know what would suit me — can you take a look and recommend?" Senior stylists genuinely enjoy this — it's permission to use their full skill. Most will spend 5 extra minutes assessing your face shape, hair texture, lifestyle factors before recommending. Free expertise.
What NOT to say
- "My friend's stylist did this brilliantly, but you probably can't" — comes off as pre-judging
- "Just whatever you think" with no constraints — leaves stylist guessing on your taste
- "Make me look like [unrelated celebrity]" — bone structure differences make this impossible
- "I want it cheaper" — try "I have a budget of ₹X, what's the best within that?" instead
3 · Common anxieties (and reality)
"They'll judge my hair / skin condition"
Stylists see hundreds of hair / skin conditions a week. Yours is unremarkable to them. The senior stylists in our outlets specifically enjoy the diagnostic challenge of "this hair is X, here's what it needs". You're not being judged — you're being assessed for what'll work best.
"What if I hate the result?"
Speak up immediately, before payment. Most issues fixable at no extra charge in the same visit (re-cut, re-style, lighter colour wash). Cuts can't be un-cut, but most "I hate it" reactions are about styling, not the cut itself — which the stylist can re-style. Beyond the visit: contact us within 14 days and we'll address remediation. After 14 days, free consultation to plan the next service.
"What if it's too expensive?"
The consultation is precisely where you find out, before any work starts. If the quote feels high, you can: (a) skip the most expensive add-on, (b) downgrade to the next tier, (c) come back another day and just do the basic. No pressure, no obligation to proceed. Free to walk out at the consultation stage.
"I don't know my hair type / skin type"
The stylist diagnoses this in the consultation — that's literally their job. You don't need to come in pre-diagnosed. Just describe what you observe: "my hair gets oily 2 days after washing", "my skin feels tight after my regular soap", "I get acne around my chin in summer". They'll figure out the type from those observations.
"What if they pressure me to buy products?"
Recommendations happen — that's part of the service. But pressure isn't our practice. "Thanks, I'll think about it" is an accepted answer. Senior stylists often say "this product would help but it's not essential — start with sulphate-free shampoo from any brand if budget's tight". Honest advice over upsell.

5 · Frequently asked questions
Should my first visit be a consultation only or a full service?
If you're considering a chemical service (smoothening, rebonding, colour, hair botox), book consultation only first — 15-30 min, free, no obligation. For routine services (cut, facial, threading, mani-pedi), book the full service — consultation happens within.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Yes. Companion can wait in the reception area or accompany you to the chair (depending on outlet space). Many first-time customers bring a friend / mother for moral support.
How long should I block for my first visit?
Block 1.5× the expected service time. Threading 30 min visit. Haircut 1 hour. Facial 75 min. Hair colour 2 hours. Bridal trial 3 hours. Smoothening 4-5 hours. The buffer absorbs the consultation, settling-in, and any conversation around take-home products.
Are there services I shouldn't try first-time?
Three to defer to a follow-up visit: (1) major haircut transformation (long → bob) — start with a smaller cut, see if you trust the stylist; (2) full hair colour (root + global) — do a strand test first; (3) full bridal trial — book a consultation first to align look + budget.
What if I have allergies or sensitive skin?
Tell the stylist at consultation. We carry hypoallergenic / fragrance-free product variants for sensitive skin. For known dye allergies, patch test 48 hours before any colour service — booked free.
Can men come to YLG?
Adyar, Anna Nagar and Porur are unisex. Adyar is women-only. All four offer the full menu for women.
