Almost every first-time Brazilian wax client has the same questions and no honest answers online. This is a minute-by-minute walkthrough of what actually happens — from when you check in to when you walk out. No marketing, no euphemisms. What the room looks like, what positions you’ll be in, what each pull feels like, what to do with your hands, and how you’ll feel afterwards.

Private rooms, female therapists, single-use cartridges. Adyar, Anna Nagar & Porur.
What Does the Room Look Like Before You Begin?
The Brazilian wax room at YLG is a private, enclosed room with a lockable door — not a curtained section. Inside there’s a treatment table, a covered stool, a wax warmer on the side counter, and a small basin of fresh towels and antiseptic wipes. The lighting is soft but bright enough for the therapist to see clearly. Air conditioning is on year-round because Chennai humidity affects wax viscosity.
Before you arrive, the therapist sets up. The treatment table is covered with a fresh disposable paper sheet for every client. A single-use wax cartridge is loaded into the warmer — this is the central feature of Next Gen Waxing 2.0. The wax inside the cartridge is brand new; no one else’s spatula has touched it. Spatulas are disposable wooden sticks used once and binned.
Your therapist is always female for intimate waxing — this is not an option you have to request at YLG, it’s the default. She’ll greet you, confirm the service, ask about any skin conditions, allergies or medications (especially retinoids or isotretinoin), and explain what’s about to happen. You can ask any question at this point, including ones that feel awkward to ask.
What Should You Wear to the Appointment?
The right outfit makes the next 24 hours easier. Wear something loose enough that fabric doesn’t press against the freshly waxed skin on the way home and for the rest of the day.
- Bottoms: A loose maxi dress, a kurta with palazzo pants, a flowy skirt, or wide-leg cotton pants. Avoid jeans, leggings, gym wear or anything seamed at the inner thigh.
- Underwear: Wear a pair you can do without if you wish — many clients prefer to go without underwear for the rest of the day. If you do wear underwear after, it must be 100% cotton, full-coverage, in a size slightly looser than your usual.
- Footwear: Anything you can slip off easily. You’ll undress fully from the waist down so heeled or laced shoes are inconvenient.
- Period day backup: If you may be on or near your period, bring a fresh tampon. Pads cannot be used during the actual wax. Waxing on day 1 to 3 of menstruation hurts noticeably more, so reschedule if you can.
What Happens Minute by Minute Inside the Room?
Minutes 0 to 3: Check-In and Consultation
You arrive at reception, confirm your service, and are walked to the private waxing room. Your therapist asks a short set of questions: previous waxing experience, skin conditions, any retinol or isotretinoin in the last 7 days, pregnancy status, where you are in your cycle. She confirms what you want — Brazilian (small strip left), Hollywood (everything off), or a custom shape.
Minutes 3 to 5: Undress and Settle
She leaves the room. You undress from the waist down and lie on your back on the table, knees up, feet flat. She knocks, re-enters, and lays a clean towel across your hips and stomach. Only the area being waxed is exposed at any time. This is the moment most first-timers feel shy — it passes in about 90 seconds.
Minutes 5 to 8: Cleanse and Trim (If Needed)
She cleans the area with an antiseptic wipe. If hair is longer than 1.5 cm she trims it down to about 1 cm with a small scissor — this is normal, not a sign you came underprepared. A light dusting of talcum powder goes on next; it absorbs moisture so the wax adheres only to hair, not skin.
Minutes 8 to 22: The Actual Waxing
She starts with the outer bikini line — the least sensitive zone — to let you get used to the sensation. Wax goes on warm (not hot), in small sections about 5 cm long. She waits 4 to 6 seconds for it to set, then pulls fast, parallel to skin, in the opposite direction of hair growth. Each pull takes under one second. The sharp sensation peaks during the pull and fades within 10 to 15 seconds. She moves inward systematically: outer line, then upper, then sides, then labia, then perianal area last.
Minutes 22 to 25: Tweezing and Finish
A few stray hairs always need to be tweezed by hand — completely normal. She applies a soothing post-wax serum (the brightening Pink Bright formula at YLG contains kojic acid and arbutin), then wipes down any wax residue with a citrus-based remover. She tells you when she’s done, leaves the room, and you redress.
Minutes 25 to 30: Aftercare Brief and Payment
She walks you through the 48-hour aftercare: no gym, no hot showers, no swimming, no sex, no tight clothing, no exfoliation for 48 hours. You pay at the front desk, schedule the next appointment if you wish (typical re-book is 4 weeks), and leave. Total time in the building is usually 35 to 45 minutes.

The Honest Pain Scale: What Each Section Actually Feels Like
Pain in a Brazilian wax is not uniform. Some areas are barely uncomfortable; one or two are genuinely sharp. Knowing what’s coming makes the experience much easier. Here’s the honest first-timer pain scale by zone.
| Zone | First Time | By 3rd Session |
|---|---|---|
| Outer bikini line | 3 / 10 | 1 / 10 |
| Upper pubic area | 4 / 10 | 2 / 10 |
| Inner thigh crease | 5 / 10 | 2 / 10 |
| Labia majora | 7 / 10 | 3 / 10 |
| Perianal area | 5 / 10 | 2 / 10 |
Two things drop pain ratings dramatically: timing your appointment for mid-cycle (days 7 to 14 after period start) and the wax formula. Next Gen hard wax knocks 2 points off every zone compared to traditional strip wax because it grips hair selectively rather than pulling skin.
The Breathing Technique That Actually Reduces Pain
Most first-timers hold their breath in anticipation of each pull. This is the single biggest mistake — held breath increases muscle tension, which makes the wax pull feel sharper and the recovery from each pull take longer. Your therapist will cue you, but here’s the technique so you can practice in advance.
- Inhale slowly through your nose while the wax is being applied — count to 4.
- Hold for 1 second while she presses the wax down to set.
- Exhale forcefully through your mouth at the exact moment she pulls — empty your lungs in one breath.
- Breathe normally for 5 seconds while she repositions for the next pull.
This is the same exhale-on-impact technique used in childbirth and martial arts. It works because exhaling activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the body’s calming response. Practice it three or four times the night before your appointment. It becomes automatic by your second session.
Immediate Aftercare: The First 4 Hours
Your skin is in its most vulnerable state in the first 4 hours after the wax. Follicles are open, the skin barrier is briefly disrupted, and any bacteria or friction can cause folliculitis (small infected bumps that look like acne). The rules for the first 4 hours are simple.
- Go straight home. Not the gym, not lunch with tight jeans, not a long shopping trip. Direct route.
- Skip the shower. Don’t wash the area for at least 4 hours. The soothing serum applied at the salon needs to absorb.
- No sweating. Stay in air conditioning. Chennai humidity plus open follicles equals folliculitis. This is the most-broken rule and the cause of most first-time bumps.
- Loose cotton only. Replace any underwear immediately if it’s tight or synthetic.
- No touching. Hands carry bacteria. Don’t check, don’t poke, don’t show a friend.

How You’ll Actually Feel Walking Out
Three feelings are universal among first-timers walking out of a Brazilian wax. Knowing them in advance reduces the surprise.
First, a strong sense of relief. The anticipation is consistently worse than the wax itself. Most first-timers say afterwards, “That wasn’t as bad as I expected.” This is so common it’s almost cliched, but it’s true.
Second, a warm tenderness in the waxed area for the first 30 to 60 minutes. Not pain — a sensation similar to a mild sunburn. Loose clothing keeps it from being noticeable.
Third, a surprising smoothness you didn’t expect. The result of a Brazilian wax is genuinely smoother than shaving — no stubble, no shadow, just clean skin. Most clients touch the area gently once in the car and are surprised by how smooth it feels.
By the next morning, the tenderness is gone, the smoothness remains, and most first-timers book their second session within a week. The first wax is always the hardest. By the third, it’s a 20-minute habit. Compare this experience honestly against waxing versus laser hair removal before committing long-term.
Should You Choose Brazilian or Just Bikini Line for Your First Time?
If you’re undecided, both are reasonable choices. Roughly 40% of first-timers start with a bikini line wax for the lower commitment and graduate to a full Brazilian by their second or third visit. About 50% choose the Brazilian directly because they’ve made the decision and don’t want to redo the appointment. The remaining 10% choose Hollywood (complete removal) from the start.
Here’s the practical difference. Bikini line waxes only the area visible outside a swimsuit — outer line and a small inner strip. It takes about 12 minutes. Brazilian removes almost all the hair, front and back, leaving a small landing strip. It takes about 25 minutes. The pain difference is real — bikini line tops out around 4 out of 10; Brazilian peaks around 7. For a deeper breakdown read our Brazilian vs bikini wax comparison.
There’s no wrong answer. Tell your therapist what you want, and she’ll start at the outer line either way — you can change your mind partway through and stop at bikini line if the sensation isn’t manageable.
