Three methods, three trade-offs. Threading is precise and cheap but slow and not great for full-face. Waxing is fast and lasts 4 weeks but isn’t right for sensitive or acne-prone skin in every case. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair plus dead skin but doesn’t touch coarse hair. This is an honest, side-by-side comparison for Indian skin types — including the hybrid approach most regular clients eventually land on.

How Each Method Actually Works
Face Waxing
A warm, semi-solid wax is applied to the skin in the direction of hair growth. It cools for a few seconds, gripping the hair shaft. The therapist pulls in the opposite direction in one swift motion, removing hair from the root. Hard wax (used in Next Gen Waxing) shrink-wraps the hair and lifts cleanly without pulling skin — important for facial use. Soft strip wax is generally avoided on facial skin because it adheres to skin and increases pigmentation risk.
Threading
A twisted cotton thread is rolled along the skin surface, catching hairs in the twist and pulling them out by the root. Threading has been used in India for centuries because of its precision — single hairs can be targeted and the shape of a brow can be sculpted hair by hair. The downside is speed; full-face threading takes 25 to 35 minutes whereas full-face waxing takes 15.
Dermaplaning
A single-use surgical blade is held at a 45-degree angle and pulled lightly across the skin. It shaves off the fine vellus (peach fuzz) hair on the face and simultaneously removes the top layer of dead skin — physical exfoliation. It does not touch the hair root. The hair regrows in 3 to 4 weeks, same length and texture as before. The exfoliation effect lasts 2 to 3 weeks and brightens the skin meaningfully.

How Each Method Pairs With Indian Skin Types
Indian skin is mostly Fitzpatrick III to V — a range that is genuinely more reactive than fairer skin in two specific ways. Mechanical trauma triggers post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation more readily, and the eumelanin content makes some treatments work differently. Here’s how each method performs.
For Fitzpatrick III to IV (Most North & Central Indian)
All three methods work well. Pigmentation risk is moderate. Hard wax is safe and effective; threading is well-tolerated; dermaplaning gives excellent brightening on this tone range without irritation issues. Choose based on hair type and timing — terminal hair points to wax or thread, vellus to dermaplaning.
For Fitzpatrick IV to V (Most South Indian)
Hard wax (specifically) and threading remain safe. Soft strip wax should be avoided on the face — the mechanical pull on skin is a known trigger for hyperpigmentation on darker tones. Dermaplaning is safe but post-procedure SPF 50 for 5 days is non-negotiable. The Pink Bright wax used at YLG includes kojic acid and arbutin, which are clinically established skin-brightening ingredients that actively support pigmentation management.
For Acne-Prone Skin
Skip waxing and dermaplaning over active breakouts — both increase the risk of spreading inflammation. Threading is safest during active acne because it doesn’t drag across the skin surface. Once acne is controlled, waxing returns as the most efficient option, but stay off salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for 48 hours pre-wax.
For Retinol Users
Stop retinol 5 to 7 days before any of these treatments. Retinol thins the upper skin layer, making waxing high-risk for skin lift and dermaplaning aggressive enough to cause raw patches. Threading is the most retinol-tolerant but still benefits from a 3-day washout.

The Hybrid Approach Most Regular Clients Eventually Use
After working with several thousand regular clients across Chennai, a clear pattern emerges. The majority don’t pick one method — they use all three, each for its strength. This is the typical regular’s monthly face routine.
- Threading for the eyebrows. Every 2 to 3 weeks. Precision is the requirement and threading is unmatched here.
- Waxing for the upper lip, chin, sideburns and jawline. Every 4 weeks. Faster, lasts longer, gentler with hard wax than threading would be at these spots.
- Dermaplaning once every 6 to 8 weeks. A periodic add-on that removes vellus fuzz the wax doesn’t pick up and gives a noticeable exfoliation glow that lasts 2 weeks.
This combination addresses every type of facial hair, manages skin texture and brightening, and keeps the per-visit cost reasonable. The cost of doing all three on this rhythm runs about Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per month — comparable to a single salon facial.
When to Choose Each Method Specifically
Choose Face Waxing When
You have coarser terminal hair on the upper lip, chin or jawline; you want 4-week results; you’re not currently on retinol; you have no active acne; the salon uses hard wax (not strip wax) on facial skin. The Pink Bright formula adds a brightening effect that makes this the strongest pick for pigmentation-prone Indian skin.
Choose Threading When
Eyebrow shaping is the main goal; you have very sensitive skin; you’re between waxing appointments and need a quick touch-up; you’ve just used retinol and waxing is off the table; budget is the deciding factor.
Choose Dermaplaning When
Hair is fine and vellus (peach-fuzz) rather than coarse; you want the brightening exfoliation effect more than just hair removal; you’re prepping for an event and want a noticeably brighter, more even skin tone for 1 to 2 weeks; makeup application has become patchy. Avoid if you have active acne or are on retinol.
Pros and Cons Honest List
Face Waxing — Pros
Fast (15 minutes for full face), longest-lasting results (4 weeks), works on all hair types, with brightening wax actively improves skin tone, regrowth becomes finer over 4 to 6 cycles.
Face Waxing — Cons
Soft strip wax on darker skin can trigger hyperpigmentation; not safe over retinol; not for active acne; requires 0.5 cm hair growth between sessions.
Threading — Pros
Highest precision for eyebrow shaping, cheapest per session, works on any skin including active acne, no chemical exposure, no retinol washout needed.
Threading — Cons
Slow for large areas, shorter regrowth window (2 to 3 weeks), poor on fine vellus hair, can be more painful at the upper lip than expected, technique varies widely between therapists.
Dermaplaning — Pros
Painless, removes both hair and dead skin in one session, immediate brightening, makeup applies more smoothly afterwards, safe across all Indian skin tones with proper SPF aftercare.
Dermaplaning — Cons
Doesn’t touch coarse hair, costs the most per session, not safe over active acne or retinol, requires strict sun protection afterwards, fewer salons offer it well-trained.
